Animal cancer treatment is becoming more and more common as primary care veterinarians and pet owners learn of its increasingly successful outcomes. Even the general public is learning about animal cancer care through survivor stories in social medial, online videos, and awareness campaigns such as the 2019 “Lucky Dog” Superbowl advertisement. The human medical community has recently looked to animal care cancer research to inform advances in human care, spurring on even more interest and applications. In fact, many innovations in veterinarian care have already been transitioned to human care, while some human-caliber developments in equipment, technology and methods have successfully been transitioned to veterinarian care. Though it is hard to know what percent of pets with cancer are currently diagnosed and treated, we are absolutely committed to achieving an Optimal OUTCOME for every single one entrusted to us.
Depending on your pet’s specific diagnosis, the intent of their treatment will be considered “curative” (cure or remission) or “palliative” (primarily comfort and well-being). Generally speaking, treatment for animals will never proceed at an intensity which causes significant side-effects for your pet as unlike in human care, your pet would not understand the rationale. Therefore, remission of cancer is often achievable whereas a cure may not be as likely for some cancer types. Fortunately, because of its recent implications for human cancer care, much research is being conducted and advancements made in all varieties of animal cancer treatments with more animals being successfully treated and even cured than ever before.
